DUI and Celebrities
If you watch the news, read magazines or even search for anything on the internet, you know that celebrities and driving under the influence (DUI) are an unfortunately common coupling. Here in the U.S., celebrities lead an often rarefied life, full of glitz, glamour and special treatment. Does this extend to their treatment under the law? Specifically in the case of driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI, depending on the state you are in); the answer is YES. Do celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Reese Witherspoon, Dina Lohan and countless others pay the same price that you and I do when they commit the same offense? Often not. Case in point, Justin Bieber is currently awaiting trial in his Miami DUI arrest, and has sought a delay of his May 5th court date because his attorneys “need more time to prepare the case.” Really? He was arrested in January, what is so complicated? Does Joe Schmoe have the chance to extend his court date after waiting already approximately 4 months to get on a court docket? Probably not.
There are also celebrities that DO pay the price however, and have to attend court mandated rehabilitation, perform community service, and also even do jail time in some cases where the state is cracking down on even first time offenders. With all that is in the media about different treatment for celebrities, what can you expect if you are arrested for a DUI/DWI? Read on to learn what steps to follow, the approximate time to expect your case to take, and possible consequences/sentencing.
What will happen first if you are arrested? You will be required to appear in court and if your blood alcohol level (BAC) was at .08 or higher, you WILL be convicted of a DUI, and possible other charges included at the time of your arrest. The next steps can vary depending upon the circumstances of your arrest, but you will be required to pay some fines and penalties and will have your license revoked for some period of time. This is where a DUI attorney can be the most helpful in mitigating the consequences. Finally, you will most likely also be required to attend some form of Alcohol Awareness or defensive driving program, and could also be mandated to perform community service hours.
