The Dangers of Texting while Driving
Why is texting while driving so popular, particularly with teenagers?
Today’s youth have largely grown up with a cell phone in their hands. Parents give cell phones to their children starting at younger and younger ages, with age 10 being not uncommon. Texting is a fast and easy way for many parents and their children to have contact with each other, and in today’s world, it is understandable that you would want to know where your child is at all times. According to a poll by the American Automobile Association (AAA) almost half of teen drivers admit to texting while driving. How many more don’t admit to it?
Why is the danger not perceived to be real? The cell phone and texting can be a double edged sword as the teenager becomes a new driver. As this has been the main form of communication for this age group for so long, it seems reasonable to them that a “quick text” is no big deal. Part of the problem is that this age group, as a whole, can have impaired judgement, a sense of immortality which rules their decisions. The consequences of poor judgement can be severe: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in the year 2008 driver distraction killed 5800 people nationwide, and caused over 500,000 injuries. Texting while driving is driver distraction.
If you have been involved in an accident which was caused by a distracted driver who was texting while driving, you need a good personal injury lawyer, one who is well versed in the new laws involving texting while operating a moving vehicle. If the other driver choose the convenience of getting his information or communications over the safety of the public, he can be found to be at fault. One experiment conducted by Car and Driver magazine showed texting to be more dangerous as drunk driving.
